Lettuce in Containers

Lettuce is one of the easiest and fastest vegetables to grow in containers. It grows very well in British Columbia’s cool climate and does not require deep containers or intense heat. Lettuce is ideal for beginner balcony gardeners because it grows quickly and can be harvested multiple times.

Plant Overview

  • Best container size: 10–15L container, minimum 15cm depth
  • Sunlight: 4–6 hours daily (partial sun works well)
  • Soil: Lightweight potting mix with compost
  • BC tip: Lettuce grows best in spring and fall when temperatures are cooler

What You Need

  • Container with drainage holes (10–15L)
  • High quality potting mix
  • Lettuce seeds or seedlings
  • Watering can
  • Optional: liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1 — Prepare the container

Fill your container with potting mix, leaving about 2–3cm space from the top. Make sure the container has proper drainage holes to prevent water buildup.

Step 2 — Plant the seeds or seedlings

If using seeds, sprinkle them evenly across the surface and cover lightly with soil. If using seedlings, plant them with about 10–15cm spacing between each plant.

Step 3 — Place the container in partial sunlight

Put the container in a location that receives morning sun and partial shade in the afternoon. Lettuce grows best in cooler conditions and may struggle in extreme heat.

Step 4 — Maintain watering and harvest regularly

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soaked. You can harvest outer leaves once the plant matures, allowing the plant to continue producing new leaves.

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing soil to dry out completely
  • Placing lettuce in too much direct hot sunlight
  • Planting too close together without spacing
  • Using containers without drainage holes
